Hello friends! We’re on the edge of Tropical Storm Hermine right now, waiting for her to hit the coast. I just heard she’s expected to become the first hurricane to hit Florida in over 10 years! I can’t believe it’s been that long. Apparently, 66 Atlantic hurricanes have missed us in the past decade – who knew?

We haven’t had any rain yet today, since the storm’s moving super slowly at the moment. But it’s been overcast and we’re prepared for the nonstop downpour to come soon. Yesterday we had a storm band with a lot of rain, so Judith and I mostly stayed inside. We had to get creative with some new rainy day activities to avoid watching Paw Patrol all day 😉
I had no idea what a hit these little games would be! She’s asked to play 6-7 times in the last 24 hours.
In my craft supplies closet, I had some large beads, wine corks, and seashells she hadn’t seen or played with in months. I got out a few glass jars and set the items down nearby. Judith started filling the jars with beads, corks, and shells, sometimes filling a jar with just one type of item, and sometimes combining types (beads and corks together, for example).
She loves dumping the jars out after they’re full, or sometimes she’ll put on the lid and keep it full for a few minutes. She also likes dumping the contents of one jar into another jar!
We got out a basket and tossed beads and corks into it – her serious disappointment at missing a shot surprised me! She would quickly grab the item that missed and try again until she made a basket 🙂
Then we moved on to filling her piggy bank with beads 😀 (This was her own idea…lol)
And since we had that long break from rain this morning/early afternoon, we went mushroom hunting in the squishy, wet backyard. This is one of her all-time favorite activities!
I loved how cool and windy it was – and the way it made her hair fly everywhere!
I’m headed back upstairs, because a little girl looking over my shoulder at this post just said, “I wanna play beads, Momma!” 😉
What are your favorite rainy day activities with the little ones when a storm (or heat or snow) keeps you inside? I’d love to hear your ideas so we can give them a try!
